When you log on to Trainline, you are presented with the list of shows being played this summer. With only 3 days before the tour officially begins, you wonder why only 4 of the 50 shows have sold out.  I went on-line to a dozen concert locations and good seats are still available for most of them.  One in particular, Lenox Mass, has 2457 seats available as of this morning. Considering the place seats just under 6000, it means that is just over half full. Not very good if you ask me. Last year it seems like all of the shows sold out, but the main reason for that is that Maroon 5 was with them. (much more popular and more mainstream). Take them out of the equation, and add in Mat Kearney (who ?) and Andy Grammer (who ?) and Train is pretty much on their own. Perhaps "hard core first generation" Train fans are staying away since Train traded in their hard cutting rock n' roll chops to become the spokes-band for family friendly, bring the little ones, squeaky clean concerts (aka....Disney's new house band).  I'll be at a few shows this summer to support the band, but if it turns into a crowd participation free-for-all filled with tweens and their soccer moms, then I might bail along with many others. Just what demographic is Train trying to please these days anyway ?  It certainly seems like management has told them to try to appeal to the younger (really younger !) crowd, to put out catchy pop songs with little or no artistic merit, and to make as much money as you can before the interest wears off.  Granted, some of the songs on the new CD have a catchy tune that sticks in your head, but with the crappy lyrics on most of them, they will soon be forgotten.  And do we really need so many pop culture references in the songs ? Enough already with that.  Pat used to be such a clever wordsmith. "The way you move me, everything is groovy".  Really ?, is that best you can do ?  Perhaps if they spent less time on the road (ooops, sorry, that's where the money is) and more time crafting meaningful songs like they used to do, the fans would come back. I know many people love the new CD, and that's fine, If you makes you happy, go for it. But in terms of leaving a long lasting legacy, the train might have just left the station.

I think you may have answered your own question.  I know I am not going to any concerts this time around.....

We don't need you at any of the concerts. We thing Train is great.

I'm sad to say that I agree with New England Guy.  I long for the more meaningful lyrics that Pat used to write, and the rock band that they 'used' to be. Too much rapping and rhyming going on, on the new CD. Once in a while is OK, but not virtually an entire CD of it.  I think some of the best songs came out  during the most torturous time of Pat's life, and although I'm glad he's not tortured anymore, I feel his songs lack the depth that his introspection used to give him.

This pretty much sums it up....great post...

Well said Barbara.  It seems like it all comes down the to all-mighty dollar.  For many years, Train flew under the radar while making GREAT music.  With the commercial appeal of Save Me, San Francisco the money started to flow in.  No doubt management started to notice that too and CA37 is their attempt to really cash in. (along with Ford commercials).  Now they are flying to shows on private jets, like they did over the weekend.  Face it, the guys are getting older, they are all in their 40's with Jimmy pushing 50 and pretty soon the young generation of Train fans will stop following them, so the time to "cash in" is now. I don't know what the set list will be on this tour, but if the Malaysia set list of a couple of weeks ago is any indication, then we will get 17 songs, 13 of which (70% !!!) are from the last two albums. Of the remaining 4 songs, 3 are ones that we have heard a thousand times (Drops, Angels, Virginia).  Seems like the set list is geared toward fans who became fans over the last two CD's.  Well how about us long time fans who would enjoy hearing a deep cut or two from some of the older albums. Regarding Pat, it seems like he no longer writes with his band mates.  All of the songs (with 1 exception) are with other song writers. Jimmy has 1 killer solo on the CD, other than that, he is invisible (as is Scott).  How much input did the both of them have on the disc? Did either one ever sit back and say, "Hey, wait a minute, these songs don't represent what Train has been from the beginning, couldn't you have come up with some better songs, Pat ?". Or maybe with the money flowing in, they did not really care.  Time will tell on that.  If the next CD is filled with the same vapid drivel as this CD, then you will have your answer. I also agree with you regarding Pat and the depth of his songs.  I have always been of the thought process that the greatest artists of our time were, in fact, "tortured souls".  And again, I wish Pat every happiness in this life, but it seems that his songs have taken a turn for the worse, and are nothing but "fluff and sunshine".  Give us the songs that we can relate to in our lives.  He has such a tremendous voice; it is totally "wasted" on CA37.  I can sit back and listen to some of his old songs and really feel his soul touching our souls.  What happened to that?  I guess it still comes down to not pleasing everyone all the time; but in the process, they are surely leaving the "true" Train fans out in the cold, standing on the last platform to nowhere.

oh new england guy,

why do you have to say these things that i hate to agree with? i know pat takes these things to heart when people don't love what he's doing. i like the new stuff, in a fun kind  of way, but i do miss the old lyrics, the old soulfulness in his voice.the amazing stuff jimmy and scott used to do.i miss all of it. it would be wrong to wish anyone go through hurt in order to produce beautiful music.  no one wants that. i think those  of us that miss it have to hold on to the memories and play the hell out of the old ones. i do that. but i also let myself enjoy the new cd .things change.even when they seemed perfect before.everything changes. life can't be all gut-wrenching beauty, sometimes it's just  for fun.well, i said what i had to. please try to limit the hate responses.

Hi Laurie,

Very well said.  Please don't get the idea that these are "hate responses".  I've loved Train from the beginning and have the utmost respect and admiration for the guys as a band and as individuals. It just pains me to see them taking a path away from what made them "Train" in the first place. It would such a shame if they went out in a mediocre way.  They spent a dozen years toiling in the trenches putting out some of the BEST music out there. They were cutting edge, having their own sound and soul. Now, they just sound like any pop band on the radio. While that might be OK for the tweens in the crowd who know no better, for me it is just painful to see.  I only do these posts to let Train know that there are still original fans out there who love them, and are concerned at the path they are taking.

oh my gosh,

i didn't mean for you to limit the hate responses.i don't see what you write as hate. quite the opposite. i meant when a rabid newbie fan reads what i wrote try not to go crazy over it. i 've seen when that happens and it isn't very pretty.

Hi Laurie,

My error, sorry.  I just dismiss those newbie responses. Be well.

Unfortunately, I'm another one that has to agree with New England Guy. I don't dislike the new album, but it definitely doesn't have the depth of the older albums. I still see Train every time when they come to town, but in the past I used to travel to 3-5 other cities a tour to see them because their shows were so great. The shows on the few last tours just didn't seem to have the energy of the old shows.

I'm hoping for the best on the current tour that officially starts tomorrow. We'll have to see what the setlists will be. (If you're going to a show this tour, please give us a quick review and a setlist if you can remember it) I was lucky enough to see four of the San Francisco Tour shows and totally enjoyed them. I was blown away by them. The San Francisco Tour was the old Train again! Every show was a completely new and different setlist. Every show was unique. They featured lots of old songs that we haven't heard in years mixed in with the new stuff. This is what all of their shows used to be. I used to see them multiple nights because they would put on thoroughly entertaining show that were different every night. I'm afraid the current tour will be the same setlist every night focusing mainly on the last two albums. I agree with New England Guy that they are losing their core base of old fans. The problem with being a pop act VS a great rock band is that most pop acts usually they peak fast and then die fast. Great rock bands that write great songs with real lyrics have staying power. Let's hope that Train ends up being the later.

You are right, Jeff, the SF shows were for the old time fans. (thanks for the bone) and the summer tour is for the new fans who are mostly interested in the last two albums.  I hope the guys from Train see these posts and that it gives them a much needed reality check.

Train's not trying to "please" anyone. Train is all about connecting with the fans. If you were really a true train fan, you'd know that. Heck, I'm eleven and I know that.
