When you log on to Trainline, you are presented with the list of shows being played this summer. With only 3 days before the tour officially begins, you wonder why only 4 of the 50 shows have sold out.  I went on-line to a dozen concert locations and good seats are still available for most of them.  One in particular, Lenox Mass, has 2457 seats available as of this morning. Considering the place seats just under 6000, it means that is just over half full. Not very good if you ask me. Last year it seems like all of the shows sold out, but the main reason for that is that Maroon 5 was with them. (much more popular and more mainstream). Take them out of the equation, and add in Mat Kearney (who ?) and Andy Grammer (who ?) and Train is pretty much on their own. Perhaps "hard core first generation" Train fans are staying away since Train traded in their hard cutting rock n' roll chops to become the spokes-band for family friendly, bring the little ones, squeaky clean concerts (aka....Disney's new house band).  I'll be at a few shows this summer to support the band, but if it turns into a crowd participation free-for-all filled with tweens and their soccer moms, then I might bail along with many others. Just what demographic is Train trying to please these days anyway ?  It certainly seems like management has told them to try to appeal to the younger (really younger !) crowd, to put out catchy pop songs with little or no artistic merit, and to make as much money as you can before the interest wears off.  Granted, some of the songs on the new CD have a catchy tune that sticks in your head, but with the crappy lyrics on most of them, they will soon be forgotten.  And do we really need so many pop culture references in the songs ? Enough already with that.  Pat used to be such a clever wordsmith. "The way you move me, everything is groovy".  Really ?, is that best you can do ?  Perhaps if they spent less time on the road (ooops, sorry, that's where the money is) and more time crafting meaningful songs like they used to do, the fans would come back. I know many people love the new CD, and that's fine, If you makes you happy, go for it. But in terms of leaving a long lasting legacy, the train might have just left the station.

I'm sorry if you feel my anger level is too high. I assure you it's fine. I also have been a fan for years. I have all the cd's also. So maybe their lyrics were different before, with different meaning. But I'm just stating my opinion also. I love train and I embrace the new album. And I think it's great fun to watch my 7 year old daughter sing along with pat on this new album! She can't wait to see him. Maybe it's time for a change up. Who knows?

Donna,

Can we take the anger level down a notch?  Everyone is just expressing opinions, not passing judgement.   I'm sure New England Guy would say that he's happy that you are such a passionate fan. He, myself and other fans who have been around since their first CD are just stating observations. The lyrics used to be more meaningful, soulful that's all.

Well New England guy...stay away. I have been a Train fan for years. But quite recently I have really began to follow them. I think they are the best out there. Who needs Adam Levine to help sell out a show? Whatever. I can not wait until I see them in Cincinnati on Aug 8. And to let you know, I am bringing my family with me. Im no soccer mom, but my kids, husband, and I are very excited to see Pat, Scott, and Jimmy. Stay home and let the true Train fans in!!

Donna, i think people are just saying that it sounds like you're angry when you say things like "stay away" just has kind of a mean feel to it. i think that there's room for all of us at the concerts. don't think anyone has to be told to" stay home and let the true train fans in". i think there's plenty of room for all  of us who want to attend. i'm going to the cmac date in august. hope they'll be a good mix of fans. it's a big world. room for us all.

and Goat....my favorite part of your  post was dissention in the "rants". typo? hmmm, maybe, maybe not. made me laugh. thanks!!

We don't need you at any of the concerts. We thing Train is great.

First of all Andy Grammer and Mat Kearney are AWESOME!

Second, I don't see little kids talking about Train at all...

Third, They might be changing thier songs to pop because it's more main stream so more people know about them and like them (Hey Soul Sister and Drive by are really popular pop songs)

Fourth, my concert sold out and i am reallllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyy EXCITED!!!!! because i have tickets!!!!

Fifth, the latest songs don't have to be all that poetic they could just be fun and catchy for like summer or something!   (Does anyone know how to get meet and greet tickets)

I am always touched when I see parents bring their kids with them to the Train shows.  So much so I am doing it myself this time.  It is hard to bond with our children on any common ground and if Train can provide a few songs in their library of great music to do this,....why be a hater?  I think it is great that Train provides a clean, upbeat show with messages that include: be yourself, love one another and have spiritual awareness.  If that message is not worth sharing with your kids, what message is?  Train has stepped up  to the plate to give us music that makes us think about who we are, who we want to be, remember our past and live for our future.  If that is called selling out to pop culture then Pat, Jimmy and Scott, I guess you can be proud of selling out.  Train is playing extremely small venues all other the US this year to connect with their fans on a more intimate level at very reasonable prices, and they are going where the money is??????  Going away from Maroon 5, a much more popular band to headline for two virtual no name performers.  And they are going where the money is?????   Really?  I dont think so.

Are you really eleven?  You sound like you're .... uh... at LEAST 18.  That being said, I'm sure that if you wouldn''t have posted your age, others would have skipped the age/experience references. You sound incredibly smart.   We are passionate, we Train fans. We all have our favorite melodies and lyrics for one reason or another. When I first heard Drops of Jupiter, I didn't get the song, until I started listening to the lyrics, and thought, 'whoever wrote this is genius'.  I'll be at the Pittsburgh concert later this month, doing my part to fill the seats.  : )

I was wrong about Drive By... I learned it was really about a guy who falls in love with a one night stand, but he is scared because he fell for her so he leaves and she then moves away. He still loves her so he drives to her. Hence the 'this is not a drive by' refers to him not being done with her just because she was a one night stand. Whatever. Anyway, I hate that y'all are talking down to me because I'm eleven.

I love the new record - it's fun and people at our show were def into it.

I love the guys, I saw my 1st show in June 2010 I won tickets to their show in Melbourne Australia, since that night I was hooked I love them and the friends I have because of these guys. Since that 1st concert I have seen 13 shows on 3 continents 4 countries. I have flown from Kenya to Ireland to see them and than travelled to London to see them. I have also seen them in my home state.I flew from Australia to San Francisco purely to see the 6 shows this was the most incredible week of my life because of JIMMY and my friends I have made because of the band. Jimmy was great he saw on his facebook page after I had mentioned I was coming over to see them and offered me Aftershow passes for a show. This was the most incredible night of my life or at least one of them because the 13 shows I have seen have been the best nights of my life and will continue to be. There's no way in Hell I would spend all that money to see a band who doesn't care about their fans. I also flew to Sydney to see the guys there as well and yet again they were phenomenal in how they interacted with how I was treated. I do agree with some of the comments that have been made i.e their musical direction I thought it was weird that only Pat wrote all the songs, and wrote them with other writers, he did write a song with Jerry their keyboardist and Jimmy also got the title of one of the songs changed. I love practically everything that the guys have released except for one song, of course I love some material more than the other, I love there old stuff so much the rockier stuff, but I also love the songs like Words, Bricks, Parachute, Marry Me. The Finish Line and Halfmoon Bay. We all know that they all need a serious chunk of time off to re-energise and maybe get in touch with what you all think is lacking. All the guys are happy now and this is reflected in the music that is being produced. They are still the best shows I have seen in the last few years except for the huge groups like U2 and Foo Fighter and Eminem. The shows they put on here with little staging and lights are amazing and full of energy. Maybe Pat will write more indepth songs now that he is struggling with the loss of his father this may now come out thru the music and lyrics he writes. I can't wait until they come down my way again so I can go to all there shows and fly to New Zealand to see them as well.

I saw Train in Kansas City on 8/10...lucky enough to get front row. It was excellent, even though they did not sing all the songs I would have liked. True Train fans want them to sing THEIR songs.  I did not really want to hear covers of Everyday People by Sly & Family Stone, We Are Young by Fun, or You Can't Always Get What You Want by The Rolling Stones; nor just snippets of their own songs....Free, Respect, She's on Fire, Get to Me, When I Look To The Sky, Ordinary, & For Me It's You. I would have loved to have heard their full songs, not just snippets and You Can Finally Meet My Mom, even though it makes me cry every time. I like every song on California 37 except Mermaid, but would rather listen to it than any of the covers they sang that night. I would love to hear them sing "Dream On" because Pat kills it, other than that save the covers for a CD. We all know Train can do any cover just as good as the originals....don't have to prove it to us!!!!!!!!!

Pat writes about his life and he is having a great time, even though 3 or 4 songs talk about death (the pearly gates). Hannah is right....there are no crappy lyrics, maybe sometimes he just has to make things rhyme.  I'm sure when he writes about his Dad's death the lyrics will be more "soulful", and  NE Guy and Jeff will be happy again. Too bad they had to quit doing the weddings....it took all of 2-3 minutes!! At least I got to witness one in DesMoines.  Also, for This'll Be My Year, Pat said he had more verses written, but they didn't use them all, so maybe it is not always something he has control over??

So long time Train fans, try to enbrace the new stuff as well as the old stuff, like Hannah at 11 and I at 50+ do. Even though Kansas City still showed tickets for sale a day or two before the concert, it was sold out.

Scalper had to lower their prices.  And as far as lyrics go..."She doesn't own a dress, her hair is always a mess"???  Still a great song!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you post is right on!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am coming back to this discussion to add to what a gift it is that Train provides a family friendly concert.  I went to the Cincy show with my husband and 16 year old daughter and invited a friend to go with her son.  My friend expressed to me with a tear in her eye that she and her son were in such a happy place at the show and she has never felt so connected with him.  My daughter is now on Twitter to follow Train and has her own little Pat crush.  She doesn't even seem bothered by the fact that she could have a crush on someone I do.  She said, "its really cool how it feels like he is a regular guy, like he would be your neighbor or something"  How cute is that?  The show in Cincy was sold out and was great. Best I had seen Train, but only my third show.  On to Dayton I go! Yeah! By the way; Andy and Matt were absolutely great as well and I am looking so forward to their performances again.  It is easy to see why these three are touring together.  Thank you Train for all you do!

Kathy, I agree with you completely! Train is the reason my granddad and I hang out so much! We are both huge train fans and can't wait to go to the concert in September! We got M&G tickets and can't wait to meet Pat and the boys! I love the band for not trying to change who they are. I'm also glad they aren't just in it for the money.

Yeah, I get that a lot. I sound eighteen and look 13-16 so people are normally surprised with my my actual age. You know what I find weird with Drops of Jupiter? I just realized the line "Did you fall for a shooting star? One without a permanent scar?" was referring to the scar on Pat's chin. That was completely irrevelant but I wanted to throw that out there...

Thank you! That's what I was getting at! There's no bad lyrics. Maybe some aren't as deep but they're still good!

Yes, I love Train for the family friendly concept. I was talking at a church thing about how I love this band for being clean and only cussing here and there. Oh, and not using the f word at all (in the songs). My activity teacher was like, "Well, once you hear a cuss word you don't forget it." So I'm thinking, I hear the f word everyday, what's the harm in hearing a couple minor cuss words? Anyway, once she figured out I was talking about train she goes, "Oh, I love Train!" I started thinking, Oh, you do? What were you saying about the cuss words again? However, I was smart enough to not say that so instead I went with, "Cool!"

Being an eleven-year-old with the mind of a sixteen-year-old, I'd say there's nothing wrong with having a mini-crush on Pat even though an adult you know does. I was at my mom's friend's house getting my hair done and I mentioned Train (as I do all the time) and my mom's friend was like "Oh he's (Pat) sexy!" I was like, "I didn't know you knew that!" My mom was like, "Yeah, Hannah dreams about dipping him in peanutbutter!" (If you're confused about that -and I know you are- click here) Yeah, Pat does make you feel like you really know him. I stopped saying 'Pat Monahan' when I talk about him and just say 'Pat'. My mom goes, "Yeah, Hannah's on first name basis with Pat Monahan." and I go, "Mom, every fan is on first name basis with Pat." It's because he's himself with everything and he makes you feel like you know him personally.
